Tesla Maintenance Checklist: The Service Intervals Every Tesla Owner Should Know
Although Tesla vehicles do not require some of the repairs we are used to with gasoline vehicles, they do still require regular maintenance to ensure safe and effective operation.
This article will get you up to speed on all the required and recommended Tesla maintenance services, how often to get them completed, and what signals your Tesla will send you when it is time for service.
Tires
Tire Rotations
Tesla vehicles, much like internal combustion vehicles, require tire rotations to ensure even tire wear over time. Rotations should be performed every 6,250 miles or when the tire tread depth difference between the front and rear tires reaches 2/32” or more, whichever happens first.
NOTE: If you have a Tesla with staggered wheels (smaller tires in the front and larger in the rear), your tires must be rotated side-to-side.
Balance & Wheel Alignment
While there is no specific mileage interval to dictate how often you should get a wheel alignment and balance, it is strongly recommended to get one each time you change tires.
Additionally, if you hit a large pothole or other road hazard, or begin to notice symptoms such as the steering wheel vibrating, your vehicle pulling to one side, or uneven tire wear, it’s a good idea to get your wheels aligned.
Driving a vehicle with misaligned wheels can lead to tire and suspension damage, poor handling, and poor efficiency.
Tire Replacement
Tire replacements should be performed every 6 years or when tires reach a tread depth of 4/32”, whichever comes first.
Tires with a tread depth of 4/32” or less pose a safety hazard while driving, as they are not able to maintain proper traction in wet or winter weather. When replacing tires, you should always perform a wheel alignment.
Please also note, because Tesla vehicles are much heavier than combustion engine vehicles, the tires on a Tesla may require replacement more frequently than expected.

Brakes
Brake Caliper Lubrication & Cleaning
Tesla recommends having your brake calipers cleaned and lubricated every year, or every 12,500 miles if you live in an area subject to ice and snow.
Cleaning and lubricating brake calipers keeps them in proper operating condition and helps prolong the lifespan of your brake pads.

Brake Fluid Check & Replacement
Brake fluid should be tested for contamination and replaced, if needed, every 4 years. Brake fluid degrades over time, which can lead to reduced brake system efficacy, corroded system parts, and faster brake wear.
Changing your brake fluid when needed ensures that your brake system stays healthy and continues to operate effectively.
Brake Pads
While brake pads may last longer in your Tesla depending on driving style, it is important to get routine brake pad checks to ensure safe vehicle operation.
Tesla vehicles are fitted with wear indicators. These indicators will make loud squealing noises as the brake pads wear down. If you hear this sound, it is time to replace your brake pads.
Air Filters & A/C
Cabin Air Filter

Your Tesla’s Cabin Air Filter should be replaced every 2 years on Model 3 and Y, and every 3 years on Model S and X.
However, if you begin to notice odor in the vehicle’s cabin, or if your vehicle has been exposed to high levels of pollution (such as in the case of wildfires), you may need a replacement sooner.
HEPA Filter

If your Tesla is equipped with a HEPA filter, it is recommended to replace the filter every 2 years and the associated carbon filter every 3 years.
In some cases, such as the vehicle being exposed to high levels of pollution, you may require a replacement sooner.
Air Conditioning Service
The Tesla A/C service replaces the A/C desiccant bag in your vehicle. The desiccant bag is a moisture-absorbing bag that removes moisture from the A/C system.
The desiccant bag should be replaced every 4 years, or sooner as needed. Replacing the bag ensures your A/C is able to keep performing effectively and maintain cold temperatures.
Wiper Blades & Washer Fluid
Wiper Blades

Wiper blades should be replaced once per year, or when the blades are no longer able to clear the windshield, whichever comes first.
Check out the following chart to identify the size of your vehicle’s wiper blades:
Model 3
Driver Side: 26 inches
Passenger Side: 19 inches
Model Y
Driver Side: 26 inches
Passenger Side: 20 inches
Model S
Driver Side: 26 inches
Passenger Side: 20 inches
Model X
Driver Side: 26 inches
Passenger Side: 21 inches
Washer Fluid
Washer fluid should be checked and refilled about every 6-12 months depending on usage. In Tesla vehicles, you must use washer fluid that does not contain additives like water repellant or bug wash. You can tell which fluids can be used in your vehicle by their color; blue fluid is safe to use, but any other color is not.
It is also not recommended to use water, particularly if you live in cold climates, as water can freeze inside the washer fluid reservoir and cause extensive system damage. If you live in cold climates, using washer fluid formulated for cold temperatures is recommended.
Key Fob Batteries
Some Tesla vehicles, like the Model S and Model X, use physical key fobs. If you have key fobs, it is recommended to change their batteries about once per year to keep them operating properly.
12-volt Battery
The 12-volt battery is the small battery in a Tesla vehicle that powers most electrical systems. This battery typically lasts for 3-4 years before needing replacement.
When it is time to replace the 12-volt, your vehicle will send you on-screen and in-app alerts prompting you to schedule service. Please note, when you begin to receive these alerts, it is imperative to schedule service in a timely fashion.
Failing to replace the battery before it wears out can lead to your High Voltage Battery dying and/or further repairs.
Conclusion
Following your Tesla’s recommended maintenance schedule is the easiest way to make sure your vehicle operates safely on the road. It is also the best way to save money on repairs over time, as regular maintenance prevents issues and system damage in the long run.
